New Wii games will not make current Wii games less terrible

As you may have read, Nintendo recently announced the first party games they plan on releasing in Japan in 2007. Here’s the list:

-Donkey Kong Taru Jet Race (renamed DK Jet or DK Bongo Blast for the US)
-Wii Health Pack
-Disaster: Day of Crisis
-Mario Party 8
-Project H.A.M.M.E.R.
-Wii Music
-Super Mario Galaxy
-Super Smash Bros. Brawl
-Battalion Wars II
-Forever Blue
-Mario Strikers Charged
-Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
-Mario and Sonic at the Olympics

It’s about time, Nintendo, because there are a lot of terrible Wii games out right now. The Wii’s ratio of playable games to shit is nearly as bad as the Virtual Boys. Far Cry, Rapala Tournament Fishing, Wing Island, World Series of Poker, Rampage, and Wii Play are horrendous. Then there’s the licensed garbage like Happy Feet, The Ant Bully, Avatar, Open Season and SpongeBob. The Wii has more than twice as many games with awful reviews than the PS3. (Awful being defined as “generally negative reviews” on Metacritic.)

This is bad news for Sony. Common gamer wisdom says the console war isn’t over yet because once the PS3 gets some games it’ll sell better. The Wii is experiencing the same drought of excellent games and it already is selling. The theory that everything will be happy for Sony once they get a few exclusives seems based on the assumption that no big games will be released for the other consoles. It’s true that if the PS3 gets DMC4, MGS4, FFXIII, RE5, etc (I don’t even remember which are exclusives any more) and the 360 and Wii get Culdcept Saga and Wii Play 2 then things will turn around for Sony. But by the time the PS3 gets its heavy hitters, Nintendo will have released Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3 and Super Smash Brothers and Microsoft will have Halo 3, Mass Effect, Too Human and Bioshock.

I wonder if people think the PS3 isn’t really dead yet because it hasn’t had the ability to really show off its super, and supposedly seamless, graphics yet. I know that I am still waiting for that “holy shit” moment from the PS3. I understand that it will have to contend with the other heavy hitters out there, but there ever comes a game that pushes the PS3’s abilities to the max and is actually fun to play, I pray for the competition.
